What is the GATE exam ?

GATE stands for Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering which is a national exam held every year jointly by IISc (Indian Institute of Science) & the seven IITs (Indian Institute of Technology). Each year one of these eight institutes is responsible for organizing and conducting the exam, however, the paper is usually set by a board consisting of professors from all these institutes. For 2024, IISC Bangalore is the organizing institute.

The exam aims to test the complete understanding of the prospective candidates in their field of study. The candidate can appear in upto a maximum of 2 disciplines every year & the exact disciplines that they can appear for can be found in the brochure published during the application advertisment.

Why write the GATE exam ?

Qualifying with a good rank in GATE has its own merits. A candidate can be eligible based on their score/rank to be employed at a Public Sector Undertaking or for group A posts under the central goverment, apply for master’s & doctoral programmes at IISc, IIT’s, NIT’s and other top institutes in India. Usually pursuing a master’s degree through the GATE exam would open up doors for a monthly stipend of Rs. 12,400/- from the Government of India during their studies.

Students who are aiming to pursue higher education abroad could also benefit from having a good gate score. Universities like the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Technical University of Munich (TUM) accept GATE scores in addition to the Graduate Record Examinations (GRE). Also, preparing for the exam helps to fine tune theoretical concepts pertaining to the candidate’s branch of engineering which would help both during his higher studies and during his job search.

The scorecard issued by the organizing institute would be valid for a period of 3 years and can be used during these 3 years. However, if you are applying for employment at a public sector undertaking usually the companies usually prefer candidates based on the most recent exam held. This means that having All India Rank (AIR 1) in 2022 may be useless for recruitment held during 2023. It is important to check the validity based on the individual company’s advertisment.

Pattern of the exam ?

The exam is usually held in the last week of January or the first few weeks of February. The exam is for 3 hours and depending on the number of candidates in a discipline, the exam could be conducted in a single set or multiple sets. The exam is for a total of 100 Marks & the scores are normalized (for multi set papers) based on the difficulty.

The exam has two sections each consisting of a series of 1 Mark and 2 Mark questions. The total marks for each paper is 100. Out of the 100 Marks, 15 Marks is reserved for Section 1: aptitude & english section. The remaining 85 marks is tested on the discipline of your paper. The exact division of marks is as shown below in Figure 1.

Each wrong answer will deduct 0.33 for the 1 mark questions & 0.66 for the 2 mark questions.

Once you have gained a clear understanding of the GATE exam pattern, it's time to dive into the essential steps to prepare for the exam effectively. By following a systematic approach, you can maximize your chances of success. Let's explore the key strategies and preparations required to excel in the GATE exam.

How does one prepare for the exam ?

Preparing for the GATE exam involves a systematic approach that can be grouped into five important steps:

Step 0: Determining the Preparation Timeline

The ideal time to start preparing for the GATE exam is subjective and varies for each aspirant. However, it is generally recommended to begin at least 12 to 15 months prior to the exam. Some individuals have managed to ace the exam with just 6 months of preparation, while others have prepared for more than 2 years. The timeline depends on factors such as the individual's understanding of the subjects during their bachelor's degree and their dedication to studying. However, successful candidates unanimously agree on allocating ample time for Steps 4 and 5. It would be beneficial to allocate at least 3 months for the final two steps of the preparation process.

Step 1: Familiarizing Yourself with the Exam Syllabus

This is the most important step that many tend to ignore. Make sure you print the syllabus and paste it somewhere visible in your study room. While reviewing the syllabus, go through previous year question papers to get an idea of how the exam is structured. Identify the most frequently asked topics for both 1-mark and 2-mark questions. Also, pay attention to any recently added topics in the syllabus that may require more focus, as there might be fewer practice questions available for them.

This is a step that you will keep coming back to as your understanding of the exam improves throughout your preparation.

Step 2: Choosing Effective Study Resources

After completing Step 1, it's crucial to narrow down your study resources to ensure an effective and focused preparation. Generally, an aspirant has two options to pursue his preparation: coaching or self-preparation. Consider the following guidelines based on your preference:

Coaching:

If you decide to opt for coaching, it can provide valuable guidance and structured learning. Coaching institutes often offer practice books that are meticulously crafted to cover the exam syllabus comprehensively. These books can be an excellent resource as they have been researched and curated by experienced mentors. They provide topic-wise questions and solutions, enabling you to practice and understand the concepts effectively.

Self-preparation:

If you choose self-preparation, it is essential to strategize your study approach. Start by thoroughly reviewing the syllabus and analyzing previous year question papers. This will help you understand which topics are frequently asked and which ones you can prioritize. Avoid the temptation to study more than what is necessary, as it can lead to time wastage. Instead, focus on targeted and efficient studying.

Identify standard textbooks for each subject in the syllabus. These textbooks are the backbone of your preparation and provide comprehensive coverage of the topics. Refer to them as your primary study material but only to the extent that is required for GATE. If you encounter difficulties understanding certain concepts, you can seek help from online resources like YouTube, but use them sparingly and only when necessary.

Additionally, consider purchasing practice books from reputable coaching institutes. These books contain topic-wise questions analyzed by experts. They serve as an additional source of practice and can provide a structured approach to strengthen your understanding of different topics. These practice books are often available at a fraction of the cost of coaching fees, making them a valuable investment.

Regardless of whether you choose coaching or self-preparation, it is crucial to have at least one standard textbook for each subject in the syllabus. These textbooks will prove handy during various stages of your preparation especially when you identify your weaknesses during step 3 and 4.

Lastly, to assess your progress and enhance your exam readiness, subscribe to at least two test series offered by reputable coaching institutes. These test series should include topic-wise, subject-wise, and mock tests. Regularly taking these tests will allow you to gauge your performance, identify areas of improvement, and get familiar with the exam format and time management.

By choosing the right resources, be it coaching or self-preparation with the aid of textbooks and practice books, and supplementing your study with test series, you will lay a strong foundation for success in the GATE exam.

Step 3: Engaging in Study and Practice

After completing Steps 1 and 2 within two weeks, it's time to embark on an immersive study journey. Dive into each topic, master them, and practice as many problems as possible. Utilize textbooks, practice books, and previous year question papers to strengthen your understanding and enhance your problem-solving skills. Remember, it's crucial to cover the entire syllabus, including seemingly difficult or rarely asked topics. Approximately 50% of the questions in the exam fall in the easy to moderate range, so comprehensive coverage will give you an advantage.

During the 12 to 15-month preparation period, it's important to be mindful of the brain's tendency to forget information. To counteract this, create two types of notes. First, develop detailed notes that capture the essence of what you learn. These notes should provide a comprehensive overview of each topic. Second, create a separate set of notes specifically focused on formulas and challenging topics. These concise notes will serve as quick references during revision and help reinforce your understanding. Regularly revisiting these notes throughout the preparation process will benefit Steps 4 and 5.

Step 4: Utilizing Test Series for Assessment

Test series play a pivotal role in your GATE preparation, especially if you aim to achieve top 100 ranks. By now, you should have identified the test series you will utilize for practice. Implement the following strategies to maximize the effectiveness of your test series:

Topic-wise Tests:

Take topic-wise tests after completing relevant topics. These tests will assess your understanding and identify any gaps or weaknesses in specific areas. Analyze your performance, identify mistakes, and focus on strengthening those weak areas. This can be done through further study, consulting the identified textbooks, or seeking assistance from peers or online resources.

Subject-wise Tests:

Split subject-wise tests into two parts. Take the first half immediately after completing the subject to reinforce your learning. Analyze your performance and address any knowledge gaps or errors. Save the remaining half for the revision phase.

Full Mock Tests:

Take full mock tests on a weekly basis during the revision period. These tests simulate the actual exam conditions and help you gauge your overall preparedness. Analyze your performance, identify mistakes, and dedicate time to strengthen your weak areas throughout the week. Make comprehensive notes of every mistake to learn from them and avoid repetition.

Remember to note each and every mistake that you make during every test that you take. Even a small calculation mistake done must be noted in detail leading to avoiding such mistakes and improving your efficiency.

By consistently engaging in test series practice, identifying weaknesses, and actively working on them, you will sharpen your problem-solving skills, improve time management, and build confidence for the GATE exam.

With Steps 3 and 4 completed, you have now developed a strong foundation of knowledge, honed your problem-solving abilities, and gained familiarity with the exam format. The next step, Step 5, will focus on revision and fine-tuning your preparation for the final stretch.

Step 5: Conducting Comprehensive Revision

If you have reached here, ideally you must be left with three months of time. Revision is a crucial phase of your GATE preparation. Allocate a significant portion of your time to revising concepts, formulas, and, most importantly, the mistakes you have made during your practice tests. Here's how you can make the most of your revision phase:

Full-Mock Test Analysis:

Take a full-mock test every week during the revision period. Analyze your performance in detail, paying attention to the questions you answered incorrectly or struggled with. Identify the root causes of your mistakes, whether they were conceptual errors, calculation mistakes, or time management issues. Make thorough notes of each mistake, including the question number, the correct approach, and the reason behind the error. Additionally, take the left over subject wise tests as and when you revise these subjects & repeat the same for every mistake made.

Concept and Formula Revision:

Dedicate time to revisiting important concepts, formulas, and problem-solving techniques. Refer to your textbooks and study materials to reinforce your understanding for these topics. Make concise notes summarizing key concepts and formulas for quick reference before the exam.

Mistake Revision:

Regularly review the notes you made for each mistake. By going through them periodically, you will strengthen your awareness of common pitfalls and improve your efficiency. Pay close attention to the types of mistakes you tend to make repeatedly and devise strategies to overcome them. Focus on understanding the underlying concepts or practicing specific problem-solving techniques to address these areas of weakness.

During the revision phase, maintain a structured schedule that allows ample time for each component—full-mock test analysis, concept and formula revision, and mistake revision. Continuously track your progress and aim to improve with each passing week.

Remember, the purpose of revision is not just to repeat what you have already learned, but to reinforce your knowledge, eliminate mistakes, and enhance your problem-solving skills. By actively addressing your weaknesses and fine-tuning your preparation, you will be better prepared to achieve success in the GATE exam.

As you approach the final stages of your preparation, ensure that you balance your revision efforts with self-care and stress management. Take breaks, engage in physical activities, and maintain a healthy lifestyle. Building a strong foundation of knowledge and consistently learning from your mistakes will boost your confidence and maximize your chances of performing well in the GATE exam.
